St Giles Baskets Festival
The idea of having a basket festival in church sprang from the old tradition of decorating a basket with spring flowers, placing a doll in it and carrying it from door to door begging for pennies.
Those of us who grew up in this area in the 1950s will remember taking the doll in its basket to school and then carrying it around from street to street covered with a cloth!
Nowadays the fund raising is done for the church. When we first revived this idea in 2001, we also had decorated wheelbarrows which were later joined by flower bedecked boots and shoes in keeping with another local tradition, followed by buckets.
Covid meant we had to cut down in size and last year we just managed a plant sale. This year we are re-introducing the baskets, the only thing we need is that the baskets must have some fresh plant material and a doll, soft toy or figurine. Have a go!
Bring your basket along to the Community Centre Small Hall on Saturday May 7th where it can go on display and we can all see your ideas. It would be good to keep them on display until after Sunday’s 10am service.
Have a try and support our church by playing your part in keeping this old tradition alive.
